i30N - A few niggles

Hello All,

Picked up my i30N on Friday and have noticed a few things which I wanted to ask about. The car is a 2019 model but on a 68 plate (Dec 2018 build) with 4000 miles on the clock.

Issue 1: Burning/overheating smell
There seems to be a burning smell when it's been driven a few miles and you stop in traffic or at a traffic light. It doesn't matter if it's in Normal/Eco/N mode, the smell is always there and happens after a short drive. In fact even if I use the heater control and do not turn the AC on, it smells a bit inside the cabin. I managed to narrow it down to the rear of the engine bay (near turbo) but the Dearlership advised me that since the car is new, a lot of the gaskets/components surrounding that area are still burning in/bedding in so this is "normal". Is this the case? If so I would of imagined after 4000 miles it would no longer be there?

Issue 2: Pops/Popcorn sound
So what happens here is after a short drive, when I shut the car off there are popcorn style sounds coming out of the exhaust, which I would usually link to heat. If I drive it harder then they are a bit louder and happen for longer. Now I believe this to be pretty "normal" since the exhaust needs to cool off however, I have not heard it on a few of my other cars that I own which are also almost new (but not performance vehicles).

Reason I mention this actually is because I had a Nissan 370Z a while ago which at the time was 3 years old with 17k on the clock. That did the same popcorn exhaust noise after driving it for a bit and when I got it checked out at Nissan they found that both Catalytic Converters were shot, and gave me an invoice of £3500 to fix them (order new ones I guess). The car was just out of warranty so I went with the decat route, but I just wanted to make sure this isn't the case here?

FYI before this I owned an EP3 Type R, and put a brand new exhaust system on it (incl manifold). That did a similar noise, where the stainless steel material expands and then shrinks from the heat, but it was not as apparent and only happened during the first 2000 miles or so since having it installed. After that it functioned as normal.

Any input on the above is highly appreciated, other than these small things I absolutely love it and cannot believe how mental it sounds even though it has a GPF filter, scared quite a few crowds of people already :D

Cheers

Issue 1: Burning/overheating smell; Have the dealer change the cabin filter. The dealer is correct but have them change the cabin filter just the same. Or, do it yourself.

Issue 2: Pops/Popcorn sound; Normal exhaust sound especially after shutting down the motor. Heat expansion and contraction.

Get rid of the GPF if your able.

I don't think it's the cabin filter since when I take a look at under the bonnet the smell is there. I will do some further inspection and inspect the filter anyway, thank you.

As for the GPF, that would render the car illegal here. As much as I want to do it, I am not removing it on a 10 month old car :p, perhaps next year.

Issue 1: He meant to change the filter because it is probably "soaked" with that smell. A new filter should improve the smell atleast a little.

Issue 2: It's normal. A lot of petrol Mercedes pop after driven. My Infiniti Q50 2.0t as well. So it's not only on performance cars.

P.S Can the GPF be removed without cutting? Legally I have no issues to remove it because you can pretty much drive without any exhaust at all in my country but I am worried about it showing errors on the dash and voiding the warranty.

1. When I activate the AC there is no smell, isn't that the only time the heater would use the filter? Or is there a separate pollen filter for the AC ? I ll inspect it tomorrow and see if it smells.

2. Ok that's good to hear. Just surprised I don't hear it on many other cars that's all. Will leave it for now :)

As for the GPF, yes you don't have to cut it. You can even buy aftermarket exhaust systems from the likes of Miltek that come with a GPF delete replacement pipe.

You would need a map to code out the errors on the dash though, which is where my worry of the warranty comes in. It will be much louder and pop harder once done, which is a good positive :D
