Bulb replacement of the High Intensity Rear Fog lights.

Why choose LED? I think all the bulbs should have been LED from the factory. Indicators certainly benefit from being replaced. The fog lights I don’t think make much difference. There is a reflector in the lamp unit, and so because the LED is in a slightly different position it makes little difference to the overall light output. Bulbs are white PY21W fitting.

Photo shows LED in the left lamp and original filament bulb in the right side.

A simple job, but the fact that the second side took half the time of the first means this might save someone else from going up the learning curve.

You have to remove the rear wheel arch liner and reach in to access the bulb holder. As I’m right-handed the right side of the car was easier than the left.

First remove the wheel. Take this opportunity to clean the caliper or you will get brake dust over your hands and clothing.

These are three of the four screws that retain the wheel arch liner. They are quite long, so make sure your screwdriver will fit.

There are also two pop fasteners beneath, pry them out to about 4 mm and then wiggle them free. Note the stones poking through the slots.

When the fixings are out there is a specially positioned nut on the caliper to hold the liner clear of your access 😊

Take this opportunity to remove all the stones, twigs etc. that have gathered here.

The bulb holder is at the top and is grey. The black item below is the parking sensor.

There is not enough slack in the wiring to remove the holder without disconnecting the cable first. That is achieved by squeezing the connector at the end remote from the bulb holder, it then slides off.

Remove the bulb holder by rotating anticlockwise 1/8 turn.

You can see a circular grey gasket to keep water out. Remove it and fit it to the bulb holder, it is far easier to reinstall in this configuration.

Remove the filament bulb and replace with LED. There is a reasonable amount of space in the lamp unit.

Refitting is a reverse of removal. I found that a little squirt of WD40 helped when doing the screws up, and with care, the pop fasteners are reusable. Put the pop fasteners in before fully tightening the screws to make sure that everything is aligned correctly.

New bulb in situ.
