just wondering what car got people into proper drivers cars/ performance cars, maybe even the story behind it?

For me i got bought a model Ford Escort RS in blue with that unmistakable whale tail spoiler when i was probably about 6, this car developed my love for cars and before long i wanted car games on my playstation and wanted to watch F1 etc.

then at the age of 13 my dad bought me my first car which was a mini. over a very long period of time of not being to drive it legally i modified it and my dad took me to car shows in it and i quickly became aware of what an iconic motor the mini is. during this period i got into attending local meets, max power magazines and subs! this sealed the deal on me and cars and i even went to college to study body repair (didnt work out for me!)

I had an original Subaru Legacy Turbo straight after university. Borderline sleeper car, nobody expects much from it. Always regret selling it. Bought a Legacy GTB Twin turbo several years later from Japan, it was good also, but somehow didn't have the same spirit as the original.

Not so much a car, but always grown up with hot hatches in the family, such as golf gtis, 309 gti, xr3i, xr2i, Astra gte etc.

So always had the interest. Then as a kid I had 100 odd matchbox/hot wheels and dinky cars.

Our next door neighbour then had an escort cosworth in mallard green and that always had my attention.

Then when I was 12 or 13 I found revs and max power and that got me into the whole modified car scene, and I would go to cruises etc.

So that's how I got really into cars. Not really one car just a vast array of hot hatches i have seen or had my childhood in.

When I was 11 in 1991, my dad bought a Saab 900 Turbo - it had the worst turbo lag ever but was a rocket ship when the boost came in. I was so excited every time he overtook something and all my school mates were jealous.
He also knew John Cooper (as in Mini Cooper) who ran the Honda dealership in West Sussex - he took me out in the brand new red NSX (reg H15 NSX) which was so cool!
Been hooked on fast cars ever since.

I’ve been thinking about this since the thread started and there’s no one single car. I’ve been Into cars for as long as I can remember! Haha

To me there also wasn't like "a car" but more an experience. I've always liked goodlooking cars, but the first time I've ever driven some performance cars (Porsche 911, Ferrari F430, Aston Martin Vantage and Lambo Gallardo on 1 day!) made me realize I wanted one, but not an extremely expensive one.
From that moment onwards, have been trying to drive as many "special" cars as possible (somehow, once you're "in the scene" this seems to get much easier) but for owning my final goal is at some Porsche. I don't have like an "urge" to own eg. a ferrari.

Well, apparently one of my first few words as a baby was "Dragon"...which I would say whenever we drove past a "Volkswagen" Beetle. My dad was a bit of a wheeler dealer on the side as well... so my fate was sealed since birth essentially!

It even got to the point that when I was 6 years old I would try to eat my dinner whilst sitting at the wheel of my Dad's pristine condition Singer Vogue (an old school British car).

My stepfather had a tuned, lowered purple Opel Kadett. The car looked great and the sound was good too. When accelerating, it always pushed me slightly into the seats, so it was clear to me that I wanted such a little runabout later on.

Toyota Corolla ke35sr from 1976. My father actually rolled one over with me inside when I was a kid (luckily only minor injuries) and I actually managed to find and buy one when I got my license and slowly restored it with my dad.

Hmmm, I always played with cars as a child, but the first impulse that I am car guy was probably my father's BMW 335i e92 in 2007. Since then I fell in love in fast cars and mainly BMWs. Till this year, when I sold my 1er and got i30N. I love this change, cause hated the whole bmw community and overall stigma around that brand :D

After the normal Mini and a couple of Fiats, my first fun car was a 1988 Fiat Uno Turbo I.E.
Kids came along so shit cars for a good few years. Later got an restored 1978 Alfa Romeo 1.6 Kamtail Spider, which was great but not from a performance perspective. Then I got a 52 plate Alfa Romeo 156 GTA Sportwagon which was mint, got photographed for AutoItalia machine and was shown at the NEC Classic Car show.
I ended up selling that and cut costs and got a much slower Fiat Panda 100HP with a rare LPG conversion, but great fun to drive.
That got replaced with an Abarth 595 Competizione. Fantastic sound, great handling and did a few track days with it. Harsh ride on the b-roads though.
That got replaced from one extreme to another with a Jag XE Portfolio with the latest 2.0 Ingenium engine. Covered some miles at speed in that. Didn’t need the space so I currently have a MX5-RF 2.0 GT Sport Tech which I love and I am keeping. The i20N will become our workhorse providing the thrill factor that I look for in a car.

I am in my late 40s and I guess, the I30n is my first experience in a UHP car. Perhaps my age and budget didn't let me indulge before ( even when I had always been a keen motorist), and I would say my previous Scirocco was not exactly hot hatch.

In my yuuff and in Uni, all I cared about was which girl from the International school I can spend time with, in the back seat, rather than bother about LSD.

Recently, however, I had a passenger ride in an Ariel Nomad. My God!!!! i had an out-of-body experience!! I climaxed!! Seeing the suspension moving next to my shins was awesome!

If I can afford it, whenever after the i30n, I would definitely consider it. If not, a lightweight , stripped out RWD machine like an Elise.
